Happy Fourth of July!

We headed down to the Iwo Jima Memorial to watch the fireworks. As soon as we got in the car and left the house, it started raining! After finding that several of the roads we wanted to access had been closed for the fireworks, and driving around for about an hour, Andy found a great place to park in a parking garage just across the bridge from the memorial. Perfect. We enjoyed our picnic lunch in the back of the van...we folded all of the seats down and laid out the blanket. The kids thought it was great fun, and Rachel danced for us(only her head didn't touch the top of the van). When we finished, the rain had let up, so we headed out across the bridge to the memorial. A kind police officer informed us that another storm was expected in about 45 minutes. We had our umbrellas, so we were fine! We hung out for awhile--playing frisbee and soccer, eating tootsie pops, and hiding out under our umbrellas during the downpours--until it started getting dark! The fireworks started at 9:15ish and were really cool. From our line of sight, they exploded right behind the memorial. It was cool seeing the soldiers holding up the flag with the smoke and lights behind them. Like seeing a scene from a battle. God bless America! I felt that it was a great farewell to us, as we'll be leaving on Wednesday. Hopefully next year's celebration is as fun as this year's was!

That was a great place to be! You are right, it was like seeing a battle or something, but much more moving. Can't believe you are almost in Mexico!
